Announced on the 29th March 2022 was the location of the host city for the 37th edition of the Americas Cup due to be run in September and October of 2024.
Announced by Emirates Team New Zealand, the multiple time winners and current defenders, in association with the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron as the current trustees and Team Ineos Britannia as the challenger of record the decision was reached to bring the competition to European shores again in Barcelona which will be the first city to have hosted both an Olympic Games and an Americas cup event.
Speaking in his role as the Team Principle for the COR Sir Ben Ainslie said “We are delighted the iconic city of Barcelona has been chosen to host the 37th America’s Cup. The historic weather data for Barcelona shows what a fantastic sailing venue it will be. The marina development and race area in Barcelona will offer excellent shore side facilities for the competing teams, alongside a great event village for fans of sports oldest international trophy to enjoy this iconic sporting event.”
With historical wind data showing a consistent wind speed of 9-15knots which should suit the AC75 foiling monohulls well and allow hopefully spectacular and close racing to take place just a few hundred metres from the beach.
The oldest trophy in sport will be contested by Emirates Team New Zealand and team Ineos Britannia who are acting as the challenger of record but also lined up to compete us Alinghi Red Bull Racing, Alinghi having won two runnings of the cup before and returning to compete are Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and NYYC American Magic which makes the field one of the most exciting seen for a while with more likely to be confirmed now that the venue and dates are more settled.
All the team at YACHTS.CO and Network Yacht Brokers will be looking forward to the cup with interest and hoping to see the oldest trophy in sport brought home to the UK for the first time in its history.
